If it was last year at this time, I probably would skip over Marte in these “I miss this Yankee” posts. In 2008 Marte was very disappointing. But let’s not go there. Marte has forever left his impression in the hearts of Yankee fans now.
I always liked Marte, I just didn’t want to see him come in to pitch. I liked him a lot better when he was warming up in the bullpen. But in reality, it wasn’t his fault that he stank. He was injured. Very injured. He missed the majority of the 2009 season. And when he returned off the DL, and he came out to pitch for the first time, I was like, “Yikes!” His ERA was quite inflated; it was in the double digits. But gradually, Marte earned my trust. He came in to face his one big lefty bat, and got him out. I couldn’t help to be glad when I heard he was on the postseason roster.
Although the Yankees won the World Series, their bullpen was not very sharp in the postseason. In fact, the only people in it who I trusted were Mo, and Marte. He was that beastly. Damaso Marte had, not a good postseason, but a FABULOUS postseason to help the Yanks win it all. Girardi counted on him, since he was the only one in the bridge to Mo that did not fall apart, and Marte delivered.
I think Damaso is one of the coolest Yankees. He’s unique. First of all, I’ve never heard the name “Damaso” before. Also, he looks quite sexy with his tight pants and awesome high socks. But the thing that really makes me love Marte is his windup. I’ve never seen anything like it. I can’t even describe it. He sort of does everything in one motion. Step and wind up the arm. And the fact that he is a lefty makes it even cooler.
Damaso, I miss you!!! I’d like to thank you once again for your stellar performance in the playoffs. The Yankees couldn’t have done it with out you!!! You have had your “Yankee moment” and I will love you forever. I hope (and I know) that there will be many more “Yankee moments” for you to come! Enjoy the offseason!!!
